 One Book One New Orleans

  www.onebookoneneworleans.com

A campaign for literacy and community, One Book One New Orleans calls on residents in New Orleans to share the reading of the same book at the same time every Fall. It is a joint project of the YLC and Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans.

One Book One New Orleans is proud to announce that its 2009 community-wide reading selection is Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table by Sara Roahen. Gumbo Tales is a loving, colorful portrayal of New Orleans' food culture, the rich history behind it, and its relationship to people, as discovered by Roahen as she turned from Wisconsin native to New Orleanian at heart. Roahen is now proud to call New Orleans home.

The 2009 reading period is September 1st through October 29th.

"I Read Aloud!" Public Awareness Campaign

One Book One New Orleans seeks to raise awareness of the literacy issues facing our community. By reading together as a community, we speak louder on the issue of literacy than a single voice ever could. In doing so, even when we read silently to ourselves, we read aloud to our community.

This fall, One Book One New Orleans, through the efforts of the Literacy Alliance of GNO and the Young Leadership Council, will begin a public awareness campaign based on the notion of "reading aloud" when reading for the cause of adult literacy.

Our goal is to raise the profile of a cause that is central to the well-being of our community but which now has too small a voice of its own. We will begin by providing "I Read Aloud!" pins to those who make a donation at our kickoff event on August 26th. Support our efforts by "Reading Aloud" too!
