Leadership Development Series

Help Rebuild New Orleans

The Young Leadership Council’s Leadership Development Series (LDS) is an intensive eight-week course exclusively for YLC members. It is designed to teach leadership skills to class members who are interested in taking on leadership positions within the YLC and, eventually, in the community at large. Class members of the Leadership Development Series are selected by an application process, and selection and class membership are both an honor and a responsibility. The $50 tuition fee includes dinner each night and all materials. The class is limited to 25 members.

Applications are due in the YLC office no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, August 31.

LDS sessions cover such topics as Organization & Structure, Finances, Marketing and PR, Creating Effective Collaborations and others. Class members will work in groups on mock projects, implementing each week the content presented by that week’s speaker. Guest speakers have included such notable local leaders as Doug Thornton of SMG, Ron Forman of the Audubon Nature Institute, Betsie Gambel of Keating Magee and Cathy Vaughn of Baptist Community Ministries, among others.

Participants will be selected from those individuals who submit completed application forms. The YLC Leadership Development Series Selection Committee will seek to identify those who are most likely to utilize their leadership abilities for the long-term benefit of our region. The committee seeks to select a diverse class so that there is broad representation of a variety of occupations, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, geographic areas and community interests.

Please review the 2007 class dates prior to submitting your application. The opening and closing sessions are mandatory. In addition, a class member may not miss more than two class sessions in order to be a graduate of the Leadership Development Series.

Qualified applicants must:

  • be a current member of the Young Leadership Council
  • possess a passion for the people and future of our region and a personal commitment to participate in positive change through community projects of the YLC
  • reside in the Greater New Orleans area
  • possess an interest in enhancing their leadership abilities
  • be willing to commit the time and energy necessary to complete the program requirements
  • commit to supporting the continuation of leadership development within the YLC
